Reflective Synopsis on eLearning: Introduction

Times are changing and technology continues to advance. Students are now entering a digital world unlike any that preceded it. It is the task of the learning manager to prepare the students of today for the world of today and tomorrow. Rather than simply ignoring the increasing use of and need for information and communication technologies (ICTs) in our society, teachers should now be incorporating their use, into learning design.  

ICTs can be harnessed in a positive way to develop student knowledge, understanding, skills and capabilities. This synopsis aims to examine, directly, the correlation between current learning theory and how four popular ICTs can facilitate this. The four ICTs, specifically chosen for their relevance and functionality, are:  wikis, blogs, learning objects and PowerPoint presentation. This synopsis will also look at how these technologies assist in facilitating higher order and creative thinking for students. Finally, the importance of developing a sound student understanding netiquette, copyright and safety will be mentioned, as well as the importance of lifelong learning.
